Oswestry, 27 March 2025 — Ten young people from Rekindle enjoyed a day to remember as they swapped routine for reins and spent the day immersed in equine life at Pen y Coed Riding Stables.
The group travelled by minibus from Newtown to the Oswestry-based stables, where they were warmly welcomed for a hands-on experience with horses and the great outdoors. The day offered a unique opportunity to explore the world of stable management, with participants learning how to groom horses, tack up, and care for the animals.
A major highlight of the day was a 45-minute horse ride, where each young person had the chance to take to the saddle and enjoy the therapeutic rhythm of a ride through the scenic surroundings. Between activities, participants shared stories and hot meals at the on-site café, refuelling with food and friendship before heading back home.
Beyond the practical skills, the experience delivered powerful emotional and social benefits. The young people engaged in new experiences, made lasting memories, and built connections not only with each other and staff, but also with the gentle, intuitive horses. The calming presence of the animals and the peaceful, natural setting contributed to a boost in wellbeing for many.
This enriching day out was made possible thanks to funding from the Child Poverty in Powys Local Engagement Pilot Initiatives Grant, which supports activities that reduce barriers and create opportunities for children and young people across the region.
Rekindle staff described the day as “a wonderful mix of learning, laughter, and personal growth”—proving that sometimes the best kind of therapy comes with four legs and a tail.
