As the holiday season fades and the long, cold days continue, for many young people January can feel like an emotional slump. The shorter days and gloomy weather can make winter feel especially draining, but the good news is you don’t need to just “wait it out”. With determination you can minimise the winter blues and emerge feeling more refreshed and ready for spring to begin. Here are some helpful strategies that could help you manage in the coming weeks.
Make the most of the natural light!

The lack of sun in the winter is a huge factor in the symptoms of the winter blues, so it is important to get as much natural light as possible. A walk around the block, a trip to a local park, or just opening your curtains to let the sun peek through can make a big difference.
Reach out to people

Isolation can be a big factor in feeling down during the winter months, it’s tempting to hibernate but staying socially connected is key to maintaining your mental health. Reach out to friends for virtual hangouts or movie nights, these small social interactions can combat loneliness and boost your mood. If you’re feeling particularly low, don’t hesitate to talk to someone you trust, just having a conversation with a friend or family member can lift a heavy weight off your shoulders.
Exercise gives you endorphins!

Regular exercise is another way to boost your mood and energy. Any type of exercise activates dopamine and serotonin, the “feel-good” chemicals in the brain which can fight of symptoms. Whether it’s an indoor workout or braving the cold for a bike ride, move your body to combat feelings of lethargy.
Prioritise self-care

It’s easy to forget about taking care of yourself when the cold weather makes you want to stay in bed all day however maintaining a healthy routine is key to staying positive. Even starting with the basics such as getting enough sleep, eating nutritious foods, and staying hydrated. If you’re feeling particularly anxious or stressed, take time for activities that you enjoy or promote relaxation. Whether it’s taking a long warm bath,
journaling, meditation, or reading, these behaviours can give you space to recharge.
Try something new

Winter can feel extra-long when you’re stuck in a routine, so break things up by trying something new. It could be a new cooking recipe, learning a language, or trying out a new hobby like crocheting, photography, or scrapbooking. Starting something different can bring some excitement and meaning into your days whilst stimulating your brain.
Remember, winter is only temporary, and summer will soon be here. The habits and strategies you build now can help you maintain your well-being all year long!
